My assembly method is essential to my series of recycled sculptures. Instead of welding or soldering, I carefully fix each component mechanically, using glue only as an absolute last resort when the pieces cannot be joined in any other way. I believe that it is precisely through this carefully considered assembly process that my sculptures can truly be experienced as artworks.
Furthermore, I often incorporate one or more objects in each sculpture that carry an emotional significance from my past — negative or positive. By integrating them, I transform personal history into something positive, or into a memory of a beautiful and magical moment, a special place, or a meaningful encounter in my life.
This deliberate approach not only creates a visually distinct final result but also gives my sculptures their unique, subtly robotic appearance. For this reason, I number each of my Trash-Robots in binary code, according to the order in which they are made.
Since I work with found materials and broken objects, I rarely have multiples of any part. This means that none of my sculptures are reproducible, not even by me: every piece is without exception a unique work — une pièce unique (1/1).
I am Michel Hubart,

a multidisciplinary artist from Mechelen, Belgium.
Driven by recycling and upcycling art.

Born in 1980, I graduated in Fine Arts from K.S.O. Sint-Lucas in Brussels.
I work with discarded materials and broken objects that I find on the streets or in nature. I transform them into upcycled objects — giving worn-out items a new purpose — or into recycled sculptures in the form of animals, insects, or humans.
Why recycle art?

Through my work, I aim to raise awareness that not everything needs to end up in the landfill, and that even broken or unattractive items can be transformed into something beautiful. I invite viewers to see things differently. Think outside the box —
or better yet: there is a box… let’s do something with it.
In addition to my own creations, I take great satisfaction in upcycling sentimental objects from clients. I transform these into meaningful artworks or functional pieces, designed to be given new life and value.
